While U.S. cruise lines’ Alaska and Canada-New England seasons have certainly been impacted by Canada’s decision to extend its current ban on cruising in Canadian waters until Feb. 28, 2022, some companies have been forced to stop operating altogether. Adventure Canada, a leading provider of small-ship expedition travel in the Canadian Arctic and Greenland, has canceled its 2021 expedition season due to Canada’s extended ban on cruising. “Due to the news of this continued ban, as well as the ongoing uncertainty around international and domestic cruise travel, Adventure Canada has made the difficult but necessary decision to cancel our entire 2021 sailing season,” said Cedar Swan, CEO of Adventure Canada. “It is a privilege to travel in the incredible regions that we do, and we are committed to doing so responsibly. By proceeding with the utmost caution, especially to ensure the safety of our host communities, we know that one day we will be able to travel together again—safely, conscientiously and enjoyably.”

“Out of respect for the health and wellbeing of all involved, particularly that of our valued community hosts, Adventure Canada genuinely supports this decision,” Swan said. “We care deeply about the places we travel to and the people who travel with us, all of whom we consider part of the extended Adventure Canada family. The safety of our guests, community partners, expedition team, and crew is of utmost priority.”

Adventure Canada says it recognizes that the extension of the ban poses  yet another challenge to the travel industry. The company points out that Canada has a seasonal marine tourism sector and it is hard on all involved, not just Adventure Canada’s passengers, but also on travel advisors, local economies that count on tourism and its own staff.

Adventure Canada claims it is in a solid position to weather the disruption that the global pandemic has had on travel. Together with its partners, the available support, and the commitment of the travel community, Adventure Canada says it will withstand a full season cancellation in 2021 and will offer a full suite of expeditions in 2022.

Adventure Canada is a family-owned adventure travel company specializing in expedition-style cruising into the world’s most remote destinations—the Canadian Arctic, the fjords of Greenland, the isles of the north Atlantic and beyond. Travelling aboard an ice-strengthened vessel with a team of expert naturalists, historians, artists  and musicians, Adventure Canada provides an on-the-ground experience that places travelers up close with local communities and culture.
